Ask our Missionaries (AoM):
Gary and Paula Hays
Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

We have been working for over 2 years to get our materials and curricula translated into Burmese and to take our ministry into Burma. There have been many difficulities and even some direct opposition to this endeavor.

We have not given up on this and are still committed to helping the people in Burma. We don’t really see this as a “failure”, but as a challenging opportunity. Please pray with us!

The Opies

Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

Andy and Tina Opie

Missionaries experience all types of failure in ministry, in language, in culture as we learn our roles. Instead of writing about a failure, Andy would like to share one thing he has learned while living and serving in Thailand. Before coming on the mission field, we knew that we had to learn the culture and know the people we were going to minister to. What we didn’t realize was how long it really takes to learn the ins and outs of a culture.

After about a year of serving in Thailand, we thought we understood most things about Thai culture, but we were just scratching the surface. We went up north for an outreach event and pastor’s conference (2 different events that backed up to each other). During the outreach event we were working with a Buddhist school. At every turn during the 2 day event, we were frustrated by how everything was going. The event was running smoothly and perfectly by Thai standards, it was the cultural issues that were frustrating us. After we returned to Bangkok, we had to realize how much we still had to learn and adapt to in Thai culture.

Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

Chris, Apple and Ethan Curry

Missionaries experience all types of failures in ministry, in language, in culture as we learn our roles. Here is a great example from Chris in his experience as a missionary:

One of my first ministry failures was in 2000 when Pastor Paul from Whitefish Foursquare and I went to the Bible school. I thought that since I was with my pastor, he would preach and I would listen like the other students. WRONG!

After he preached, they asked me to come up and give a message. So, I thought of a Scripture from my devotion time that would work, but couldn’t remember what Proverb it was! I stumbled up front and fumbled around in one of their Bibles up at the pulpit until I finally found it. Thank God that His grace was more than sufficient for a short sermonette. I remember Pastor Paul saying, “I didn’t know you could preach!” Lesson: come prepared in season and out!

Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

Mike, Bee, Beam and Faith Arter

Missionaries experience all types of failures in ministry, in language, in culture as we learn our roles. Here is a great example from Mike in his experience as a missionary:

I have faced many challenges in communicating with other Thai people. There have been many times where I think I understand what is being said and it actually means the exact opposite. I have come across many situations where one thing would be said, but actually communicating something different. I am still learning and look at each situation as a learning tool.

Bee is a wonderful blessing in our ministry because she helps me on numerous occasions to understand how Thai people think. Bee encourages me and teaches me sometimes daily on understanding how to effectively communicate as well as understanding the many cultures that surround us. Language and culture learning is an ongoing focus so as to better reach and love the people that surround us with the love of God!

Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

Neill and Diana Gilbert

Missionaries experience all types of failures in ministry, in language, in culture as we learn our roles. Here is a great example from Neill and Diana:

We were in a council meeting and made suggestions as to how things could be done. We found out later that culturally, since we were older and missionaries, that they took it as we were telling them what to do, rather than suggesting ideas. The council was upset and it took us years to regain their support.
