If you had 5 minutes to preach right now, what would you share?

Chris, Apple and Ethan Curry

The Mission of Jesus

Luke 4:18, 19 (NIV)

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

What was Jesus’ mission statement while ministering on Earth? If you were to say it in one sentence or Scripture, what would his mission statement be? I believe that his mission statement is found in this verse. Jesus’ mission statement for his ministry could be reduced to: preaching good news to the poor, proclaiming freedom to prisoners, recovering sight to the blind and releasing the oppressed.

We believe that his purpose is as relevant to our ministry today as it was 2000 years ago. We desire for the Spirit of God to move mightily in the Golden Triangle among the unreached people groups. These poverty-striken folks are fearful captives to animism, oppressed by the majority and blind to the freedom found in Jesus. We want them to know the incredible news of hope that is found in Jesus Christ and proclaim his favor in their lives—spiritually, physically, psychologically and socially. It’s our mission statement and I believe that it should be the same for all Christians wherever they might be. Sure, a person might not be “preaching” the good news, but we all can share or explain it to pre-believers.

Daily, we’re surrounded by people who live oppressed and captive to the enemy of God while living in spiritual blindness. They need to hear the good news from us! You don’t have to go half-way around the world to share the redemption story. All followers of Jesus can partner with what He’s doing and lead people out of the darkness and into the light of eternal living hope at home and abroad. So let’s join together with Jesus’ mission statement for our lives and move forward!

Where have you experienced success in your ministry?

Chris, Apple and Ethan

Success? Actually, leading others to Christ through relational evangelism, seeing them grow in the Lord and then reaching out to their own people feels like the greatest overall success. Partnering with God and others in the church to do this is really humbling and amazing!

Where have you experienced failure in your ministry?

Chris, Apple and Ethan Curry

Missionaries experience all types of failures in ministry, in language, in culture as we learn our roles. Here is a great example from Chris in his experience as a missionary:

One of my first ministry failures was in 2000 when Pastor Paul from Whitefish Foursquare and I went to the Bible school. I thought that since I was with my pastor, he would preach and I would listen like the other students. WRONG!

After he preached, they asked me to come up and give a message. So, I thought of a Scripture from my devotion time that would work, but couldn’t remember what Proverb it was! I stumbled up front and fumbled around in one of their Bibles up at the pulpit until I finally found it. Thank God that His grace was more than sufficient for a short sermonette. I remember Pastor Paul saying, “I didn’t know you could preach!” Lesson: come prepared in season and out!

Share your heart for Thailand / the Golden Triangle area:

Chris, Apple and Ethan Curry

Our heart is to see all of the animists in the Golden Triangle to know Christ. Animists are people who believe in an animated spirit world. This spirit world is filled with capricious spirits that need appeasing, or their wrath will be poured out. Animists among the hilltribes live in fear of these spirits without knowledge of a greater and more powerful Spirit.

Our vision is to reach them with the good news that there is hope and they don’t need to live in fear. 4. Our current ministry focus is church planting and education (at risk-children, literacy, Bible college, in-service training, orphans).

Tell us about your call to missions / ministry!

I (Chris) was called to missions during a prayer meeting about fifteen years ago.  Subsequently, I joined Life Pacific College to help me prepare for ministry in China.  However, God had another plan! After finishing at LPC, I was the youth pastor at Whitefish Foursquare Church in Montana.  During the first few couple months there, we had a district conference to attend eight hours away in Billings.  I drove alone and after worshiping the Lord for a couple hours, enjoying His presence, He suddenly spoke,
“You are not going to China.“
With that I was suddenly led to think about Bangkok, Thailand.  Yes!  It’s a gateway city and I can go there, teach English and evangelize relationally (which was what I was planning to do in China).  By the way, the only thing I knew about Thailand was pad thai noodles and that they’re a Buddhist country.

Three days into the conference, I met with Fred Horner from FMI and he said that they would like me to consider going to Bangkok to help a missionary couple start a school.  Well, THAT was confirmation and within a year I was in Bangkok helping the Hilderbrands with World Base Thailand!
